A US study presented this week reports CPAP usage does not influence sex life.
Presented at the CHEST conference in the US, it was a survey based study with limitations in study design. Data from our group (PhD project of Kerri Melehan) utilising a randomised controlled trial with real and sham (placebo) CPAP has reported that real CPAP therapy has positive effects on sexual function in men especially if used for > 4 hours per night. Kerri presented this data at the recent European Sleep Research Congress in Estonia. Kerri’s study is a more definitive and robust design but more work is needed in this important area impacting on patient quality of life.
